Immersions

Our Immersion experiences at SJC enable our students to witness and live out our faith in a positive and proactive expression of their faith. We have a growing immersion program that incoporates service and reconciliation. Our local Immersion program focuses on Aboriginal Reconciliation. This experience provides opportunities for Year 11 students to learn more about Aboriginal culture, history and traditions whilst also learning more about Aboriginal spirituality and connection to Land. The experience is a partnership between Xavier High School Albury and St Johns College Dubbo. Students and staff from both schools work closely with local elders and community to learn and grow in their understanding. Following two days in Dubbo, the Immersion moves to Moree where students and staff connect with elders and community members of Gamillaroi nation to learn their culture, history and experiences. There is a particular focus on the Freedom Rides, Myall Creek Massacre Site, Moree Cemetery and exploring Terry Hie Hie. Students experience Aboriginal art, storytelling, Dreaming and the connection between Aboriginal Spirituality and the Catholic Church.

In 2024 we have our inagural Cambodian Immersion Experience for 40 students and staff. This is a service opportunity for our students to live out their faith by assisting those in need. Students will raise $5000US to build a house for a family in need in Cambodia- working on a building site for 3 days to ensure that this family have access to a home . Throughout this 8 day experience students will also work in Cambodian schools supporting and assisting students, and contributing to a building program in a school. Additionally students will visit significant sites in Phnom Penh and Siem Riep to understand the genocide that took place in Cambodia following the rule of Pol Pot during the 1970's and 80's. Students will visit temples and develop understanding of Cambodian cultural life whilst assisting Cambodian families and students through the building program.
